| With the recent release of Punch Out!! for the Wii, Nintendo’s classic boxing series is back at the forefront of the minds of gamers (well, some of them at least). Today though, I am fixated on what I believe is, sadly, the black sheep of the Punch-Out!! trilogy; Super Punch Out!!.
Super Punch-Out!!, like the first, started out as an arcade game with just five opponents: Bear Hugger, Dragon Chan, Great Tiger, Super Macho Man, and Vodka Drunkenski (later changed to Soda Popinski). While Tiger and Soda would later come to the Nintendo Entertainment System (as well as Super Macho Man who appeared on both), Bear Hugger and Dragon Chan would be left out until the Super NES became home to the Punch Out!! Series as well. |

Super Punch Out!! came to Super NES consoles in North America on February 28, 1994 and instantly became a hit due to its unique, anime-like art form and arcade-style gameplay. It also had a nice choice of opponents with sixteen (four in each circuit: Minor, Major, World, and Special). With characters like Gabby Jay, Heike Kagero, Narcis Prince, and others voiced by future Mario voice-actor, Charles Martinet, I guess it was destined to be memorable. There’s also a time attack mode after you complete each circuit, which adds some replay value.
Unlike in the NES game there is no heart meter, so you can punch ‘til the cows come home. There’s also a knockout meter like what was in the arcade games. Oh, and there may or may not be a glitch to fill it up when you throw a certain punch. Wink! |
| Overall, Super Punch Out!! is an amazing game that I’d take over the NES version any day. I know that’ll send some people into “nerd rage mode,” but that’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it. It’s well worth the eight dollars on the Wii’s Virtual Console or the eleven dollars or so for the actual cart on eBay. - Andrew
