| Go back today, my friends, and play Super Ghouls 'N' Ghosts. Regardless of how "great" a gamer you think you are, this game will almost certainly humble you in a hurry. This is easily one of the most difficult games ever made...But when you beat it, it also feels much more satisfying because of it. Difficulty aside, this is one of the best titles that the 16-bit era had to offer.
You take the role of Arthur, a knight who prefers boxers over briefs. Be thankful he's not wearing the tighty whiteys, because I guarantee that you'll be seeing his boxers quite often in ths game. Like Ghosts 'N' Goblins before it, Super Ghouls 'N' Ghosts has a very bizarre way to determine the health of Arthur. It's based on his armor, or lack of armor. Take too many shots, and your armor falls off, leaving you open to be killed with one shot. On the flip side of that coin, if you don't get hit, you can build your armor up to the point where you get super powers, making it easier to advance in the game. |

The gameplay is amazingly fun for how simple it is. It's pretty much the standard jump and fire stuff. However, they also implimented a weapon system sort of similar to Castlevania. Sometimes when you find a treasure chest, or kill an enemy, you'll be praying for a certain type of weapon. Every weapon can kill any enemy, but it's the strategy and luck of getting the right weapon for the right enemy that makes this game very addictive. The last time I played this game, I played it for seven hours straight...Refusing to stop playing until I had beaten the game.
Speaking of beating the game, I believe that the developers of this game had a sense of humor...I won't fully explain why. I'll just say that when you think that you've beaten the game...You get slapped in the face and told to continue. Personally, this abusive behavior by the game actually inspired me to beat the game rather than make me quit. It just made me want it more, because I had the taste of victory in my mouth, and I wasn't gonna settle for off-brand macaroni and cheese after I got that taste. |
| Graphically, the game is beautiful. It has a variety of very different environments, and each one is pretty enough to ask to go to prom with. The bosses are huge, some of them take up 1/3 or more of the screen, and each one looks like a Miss America contestant...If Miss America included bizarre killing machines, that is. From a ghost ship to the arctic tundra to a castle, the levels never leave you feeling bored.
Super Ghouls 'N' Ghosts is a great game, however some people may not be able to look past the difficulty to notice. It is truly a game that you must put some time into in order to succeed; you won't be beating it the first time you sit down to play it. However, if you can get past the difficulty, you'll find a rewarding experience and when you make it to the screen that says "The End" you'll feel that you've done something that you can truly gloat about. - Ape |
