| Final Fantasy is one of the most loved series in video games. In Japan, people line up for blocks when the newest Final Fantasy hits store shelves. It is a series that constantly produces quality games for it's fans. The series is known for its innovative gameplay mechanics and wonderfully written stories. Final Fantasy III (released as Final Fantasy VI in Japan) does not stray from what makes Final Fantasy so popular. In fact, despite not being as flashy and pretty as recent Final Fantasies, many consider this game to be the best in the series, hands down.
There really isn't a main character that the story follows. Instead, it follows several characters as they try to save the world from a diabolical madman named Kefka who is bent on destroying everything that he possibly can. As you follow the characters through the game and see the story unfold, you begin to truly feel for the characters. Despite the number of characters the game has you control, the story for each character is easy to understand...and often times, hard to forget. The amount of story thrown at you never feels overwhelming. |

Each character has his or her own unique skills to bring to the party. Terra is able to use Black Magic from the beginning of the game. Locke is good at stealing items from enemies. Edgar likes to use gadgets to do damage to the enemy. Gogo can mime the actions of the party member who went before him. These skills make you have to sometimes plan out who to put in your party for a particular boss fight. Sometimes, who you have in your party can be the deciding factor in if you win or lose a boss battle.
The real hook of the game, however, is exploration. Through exploration, you can come across hidden playable characters, hidden weapons, and hidden locations. Finding these are rewarding, particularly if you can find Gogo to recruit into your party, who may be the most useful character in the game. You can also gain valuable items if you can find the Colliseum and do battle with the enemies they pit you against. Exploration outside of the story can sometimes be just as fun, and sometimes more fun, than the actual story itself. |
| The game has many memorable moments in it's fifty-hour-plus gameplay. From an opera scene, the backstory of Gau, and the very-long twenty-plus minute ending, you will be remembering this game long after you play it. Somehow, it manages to also seems very cinematic, though the game was made before the use of CG cutscenes. You know a game is special when deformed 2-d sprites are able to induce memorable, emotional moments just as good as any CG cutscene ever could.
Final Fantasy III was the last 2-D game in the Final Fantasy series...And it went out of the 2-D generation with a big bang. Final Fantasy VII often takes most of the headlines, but most hardcore Final Fantasy fans consider Final Fantasy III to be the best of the series. Is it the best? It's a matter of opinion, but there is no doubt that if you like RPG's, then you will almost certainly fall in love with Final Fantasy III. - Ape |
