| Many years ago, I had either a game or a demo compilation for the Playstation One. I forgot which it was, and what it was called, but I would never forget that whatever it was, there was a demo for Tomba! on it. I was almost immediately entranced with the look, the feel, and the humor of this game. I vowed to myself that I would own the real game, and a couple months later it was finally mine. So without further delay, let's dig into Tomba! And yes, the exclamation point is part of the title.
So, you're this guy called Tomba, with crazy pink hair, frolicking in his perfect island home with the perfect island populace. But then these evil pigs barge in corrupting the island with evil and greed. They take all the gold and then they made the ultimate mistake, they stole Tomba's grandfather's bracelet and now Tomba is out to get it back, armed with a bag that will send the Evil Pigs back to the hell from which they came. Also, there's a monkey called Charles who does stuff and makes fun of you...but who cares? It's a monkey! |

What really got me into this game was the visual look of it. I don't want to say that graphics are technically masterful, since they are a bit on the simple side, but it literally looks like an illustrated children's book. Everything is bright and colorful, but the character models are a bit fuzzy and the difference in looks between adventure mode and village mode is a tad jarring, yet for this game and for what it was trying to achieve, it totally works. It does have that wide-eyed, child-like innocence to it that big fancy graphics would have derailed.
The real hook of this game is not the graphics, but the missions that populate it. Some of them are fairly normal like ‘Get Your Bracelet Back,’ ‘Defeat the Evil Pigs,’ and ‘Visit So-and-So and Such-and-Such.’ Then there are some far-out ones like ‘Learn to Swim,’ ‘Eat a Mushroom,’ and ‘Stop an Argument.’ The missions are varied enough to be loads of fun and there are plenty of them to do to make the game just fly by. The difficulty levels on each mission are also varied enough, for some are just a short walk to talk to someone and others just span the whole game. |
| This game is awesome! It's incredibly fun to play and the difficulty has a nice, even slope. It's good cotton candy for the eyes, hands, and brain while you cause an evil pig genocide. It's a shame that the publishing company, Whoopee Camp, would only release one more game, a sequel to Tomba which isn't as good, before they went under. - Patrick |
