| Between the time of Goldeneye and Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark and Banjo-Tooie was the eye of hurricane for Rare. I'm not saying that they didn't make anything of value but the time period was more of them biding their time. However, something did grow in stature during that time, something did become awesome. That something was Jet Force Gemini, an action game that had a huge body count of insect drones this side of Arnold Schwarzenegger, and a third of that body count comes from a dog. So without further ado, let's dig into Jet Force Gemini.
The story begins on the outskirts of Planet Goldwood where the evil Mizar has attacked the populace with his insect drone army. The Jet Force fleet comes to the rescue, but they're all destroyed...all but the one ship that contains our three heroes. They leave their ship and crash land on Goldwood where they are also forcibly split up. Along the way, they re-unite and meet up with Floyd while entering the evil Mizar lair. They beat him up but Mizar escapes and hijacks an asteroid heading for Earth which will hit in one week. The king of the planet, King Jeff, offers his assistance but only after you save all of his people and get the parts to make a spaceship fast enough to catch the asteroid. |

This game is the purest action game that Rare has ever produced. I know that Goldeneye and Perfect Dark have their action moments but those games attempted to make the player use their brains every so often. In Jet Force Gemini, it's all shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot some more, and every so often collect an item. However, this game does make a token attempt at puzzles with the fact that the boy can walk on lava, the girl can swim, and the dog can hover for a time like Princess Toadstool in Super Mario Brothers 2. Other than that, you're just making a building using the bodies of the insect drones as bricks and their blood as mortar....yeah, I have no idea what I was getting at either, it's just awesome.
What is not awesome, however, is that fetch-quest that you have to do to actually complete the game, save Jeff's people. It's not exceptionally hard since you have to touch them and they are saved. Some of the time they're out in the open, so there's no problem saving them. Now the majority of them are being guarded by the insect drones which isn't too bad, but there's the case that the tribal are killable, mostly by you. It's no big deal since they re-spawn when you exit and re-enter a world but it's annoying when you just want to finish the game. Oh, and the game does not tell you that you can exit and enter planets, it took me two separate playthroughs to figure that one out and I stumbled upon that by accident! Rare should know better than that! |
| So this game is the closet we would probably ever get to a Starship Troopers game. There's humans killing bugs and you see them explode while collecting their heads. Also, it's a lot better than that movie anyways. What this game does really well is basically relax the player. If they had a really bad day, they can pop this game up kill some things and they'll probably feel better. I don't know, it worked for me. - Patrick |
