| Have you ever played Centipede and thought to yourself, “This is alright...But it’s not intense enough for me.” Well, then Attack of the Mutant Camels is for you. Like in Centipede, you’re shooting and objects that move from left to right, while slowly dropping down a row each time, moving closer to you...Except unlike in Centipede, in Attack of the Mutant Camels, you’ve also got a ship on the left side of the grid and a ship on the bottom side almost at all times...And these ships will shoot at you. So, while you’re trying to murder the ‘mutant camels’, you also need to dodge the bullets of those ships...or mutant camels or whatever they are.
The gameplay is pretty frantic. To compare it to a recent game release, Attack of the Mutant Camels is sort of like Geometry Wars...Of course, you need to have good aim while shooting to destroy what you need to destroy, but since you’re doing a lot of dodging as well, the game feels very spontaneous in nature. You can’t really plan ahead, you just need to shut off your mind and react to what’s happening. I also compared it to Centipede earlier. However, unlike Centipede, you’re free to move around the screen rather than simply move left to right...But, you can still fire in only one direction; up. This frantic style of gameplay is good for the game...However, it may also turn some players off...Especially when there’s a possibility that you could die before a single attackable enemy enters the screen. |

Graphically, the game isn’t breathtakingly beautiful, but it does its job. The shapes that you’ll see within the game look like the typical Atari-style graphics of the time...However, the thing that makes the graphics seem somewhat fancy is the grid-style background rather than a plain, dull black background found in most games of similar styles. Also, while it doesn’t really effect the gameplay in any way, I just feel the need to mention that the ‘camels’ that you’re shooting at don’t look a thing like camels. As far as the audio goes, it’s standard fare of the time. Bleeps and bloops are the sound effects that you’ll hear here. Nothing fancy, nothing special. Despite the fancy backdrop, most of the cosmetics here are just plain...While there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s not gonna gain it any points in this review, either.
Overall, Attack of the Mutant Camels is basically Centipede on steroids. If you like Centipede, but are looking for a little more of a challenge and/or a faster-paced style of gameplay, then you’ll definitely find some fun here. However, if the shooters of olden times like Centipede, Space Invaders, or Galaga aren’t your thing, Attack of the Mutant Camels isn’t something that’ll convert you into a fan. As it is though, it’s a good, competent, frantic shooter that most Commodore 64 owners should enjoy. - Ape |
